Rapid inactivation of bacterial spores using plasma activated water: development, species identification and sporicidal mechanism
This study demonstrates that rapid inactivation (> 6 log reductions in 10 seconds) of C. difficile spores on dry surfaces can be achieved using plasma activated water (PAW) generated in situ or in a form of fine droplets. The concentration of peroxynitrite and pH level in the PAW likely play a critical role in the rapid sporicidal efficacy, leading to spore coat damage and membrane integrity loss.
متن کاملInduced Sporicidal Activity of Chlorhexidine against Clostridium difficile Spores under Altered Physical and Chemical Conditions
BACKGROUND Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial commonly used to disinfect the skin of patients to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Because chlorhexidine is not sporicidal, it is not anticipated that it would have an impact on skin contamination with Clostridium difficile, the most important cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea. However, although chlorhexidine ...

Bacteriol. 86:1030-1036. 1963.-Gas-displacement and gas-adsorption techniques were used to determine the chemical density and physical surface properties of the spores of Bacillus subtilis 15U, B. cereus 720, and B. stearoth...
متن کاملUnlocking the Sporicidal Potential of Ethanol: Induced Sporicidal Activity of Ethanol against Clostridium difficile and Bacillus Spores under Altered Physical and Chemical Conditions
BACKGROUND Due to their efficacy and convenience, alcohol-based hand sanitizers have been widely adopted as the primary method of hand hygiene in healthcare settings. However, alcohols lack activity against bacterial spores produced by pathogens such as Clostridium difficile and Bacillus anthracis. We hypothesized that sporicidal activity could be induced in alcohols through alteration of physi...
متن کاملSporicidal characteristics of heated dolomite powder against Bacillus subtilis spores.
Dolomite is a double salt composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). The heat treatment of CaCO3 and MgCO3 respectively generates calcium oxide (CaO) and magnesium oxide (MgO), which have antimicrobial activity. In this study, heated dolomite powder (HDP) slurry was investigated for its sporicidal activity against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 spores. The B. subtilis s...
